Focus and scope

The Revista do Museu de Arqueologia e Etnologia was created with the aim of promoting the dissemination of excellent scientific research in the areas of Archeology, Ethnology and Museology. The publication is semiannual, follows the peer-review system and the public access policy with full open content, with the reception of articles in a continuous flow.

It publishes unpublished texts in Portuguese, Spanish, English and French in the following forms: articles that present the results of original scientific research, or method development, extensive bibliographic or theoretical reviews on the topics covered by the Journal, unpublished book reviews, theses, dissertations and other productions with academic relevance, notes with preliminary and partial results of unpublished research or still in development, interviews with renowned professionals in the areas of Archeology, Ethnology and Museology. Dossiers may be published separately or in the body of an edition.

Peer Review Process

Articles submitted to the Revista do Museu de Arqueologia e Etnologia will be evaluated by at least two external reviewers, selected by specialty and/or affinity in relation to the thematic content of the works under their appreciation. Reviewers must disclose to the editors any conflicts of interest that might influence their opinions about the manuscript, and they must declare themselves unqualified to review specific manuscripts if they believe this procedure is appropriate.

The reviewers reserve the right to completely reject the submitted article; present a favorable opinion subject to the reformulation of the article or similar work; submit suggestions for reformulation, as well as the right to suggest editing the reformulated text, provided that any changes do not affect its content. The opinions must present a critical evaluation of the articles or similar works, highlighting their importance. If the opinion indicates reformulations in a given work, all excerpts must be pointed out with emphasis on paragraphs and/or pages, as the case may be.

The reviewers are given a period of twenty calendar days, from the date of delivery of the article, for the presentation of the opinion. This deadline may be extended for an equal or shorter period, at the discretion of the editorial committee, provided that the extension of the deadline does not incur delays in the composition and editing of the journal. The reviewers must prepare an opinion regarding the reevaluation of the text for which they suggested changes in a previous opinion.

Journal history

The Revista do Museu de Arqueologia e Etnologia was created in 1991, replacing the periodicals of the former Museu de Arqueologia e Etnologia, Instituto de Pré-história and Museu Paulista (Dédalo, Revista de Pré-história and Revista do MuseuPaulista), as a result of the merger of these institutions linked to research in Archeology and Ethnology. It is an academic journal dedicated to the publication of works on Archeology, Ethnology and Museology, with an emphasis on Africa, America, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. In 2016, all published numbers were digitized and made available in open access on the Portal de Revistas USP.

Confidentiality: Editors and other members of the editorial team must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript, except to the reviewers and members of the editorial board.

Disclosure and conflicts of interest: editors will not use unpublished material disclosed in a manuscript submitted in their own research without the express written consent of the author; must refuse to evaluate manuscripts that generate conflicts of interest due to competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or links with any of the authors, companies or institutions linked to the manuscripts.

Involvement and cooperation in investigations: Editors will take appropriate action when ethical complaints have been made regarding a submitted manuscript or published article.

Duties of the referees

Contribution to editorial decisions: peer review helps editors in making editorial decisions and, through communications with the author, can also help to improve the submitted article.

Punctuality: Any reviewer of an article who does not feel qualified to review the article or knows that its immediate reading will be impossible must notify the editor immediately.

Confidentiality: Entries received for review must be treated as confidential documents and must not be shown or discussed with others.

Objectivity standards: opinions must be written in an objective way. Reviewers must express their views clearly and supported by arguments.

About the sources: reviewers can identify relevant works already published on the topic of the articles, which were not cited by the authors. The reviewer should draw the editor's attention to any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript in question and any other published article of which he or she is personally aware.

Disclosure and conflict of interest: privileged information or ideas obtained by the reviewer by reading the manuscripts must be kept confidential and must not be used for personal gain. The reviewer should not evaluate manuscripts in which there is a conflict of interest due to competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or links with any of the authors, companies or institutions linked to the manuscripts.

Authors' duties

General rules: authors of works that refer to original research must present an accurate report of the work carried out, as well as an objective discussion about its meaning. Additional data must be accurately presented in the article. The document must contain sufficient details and references to enable the research carried out to be replicated. Fraudulent or intentionally inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.

Originality and plagiarism: authors must ensure that the works are entirely original and that they use the work and/or texts of others that this is properly cited. Plagiarism in all its forms constitutes unethical and unacceptable editorial behavior. As of 2020, the verification of similarity will be carried out using the Turnitin tool, with access made available by the USP Agency for Academic Information Management (AGUIA).

Multiple, redundant, and simultaneous publication: an author should not publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal at the same time and/or publishing the same article in more than one journal constitutes unethical and unacceptable editorial behavior.

About the sources: the work of other authors must always be recognized. Authors should cite publications that were important in determining the nature of the reported work. Information obtained in private, such as in a conversation, correspondence, or discussion with third parties, must not be used or reported without the source's explicit written permission. Information obtained through confidential services, such as handwriting arbitration or grant applications, should not be used without the explicit written permission of the author of the work involved in these services.

Authorship: the authorship of the work should be restricted to those who made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. All those who have made significant contributions must be listed as co-authors. Persons who participated in certain aspects of the research project must be listed as contributors. The main author(s) must ensure that all appropriate co-authors are included in the article. The lead author must also ensure that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the manuscript and that they have agreed to its submission for publication.

Disclosure and conflicts of interest: All authors must disclose in the manuscript any financial or other conflicts that may influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project must be indicated in the article.

Fundamental errors in published works: When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in their published work, it is the author's obligation to immediately inform the editors and cooperate with the editor to correct the article.
