Abstract

This paper addresses the issue of creative freedom of writers-translators as opposed to exclusive translators, seeking to understand the relationship that these agents establish with the translation. In this context, the poetic dialogues established in the translation of Le côté de Guermantes (1920) by Marcel Proust, conducted by Mario Quintana and published in Brazil under the title O Caminho de Guermantes (1953) will be examined. To this end, the reflections of Antoine Berman (1984; 1995) will be used, as well as theoretical contributions that accumulate writer’s and translator’s functions and who have reflected about this twofold office, as it’s the case of Valery Larbaud (1997) and Jean-Yves Masson (1990), as well as Quintana's own reflections.
