Abstract

This study integrates a wider research line that endeavours to contribute to the establishment of a typology of interlingual translation. The investigation comprises a comparative study of finished products, seeking to verify the level of relevance of the direction of the translation act to the translation process. To carry on with the purpose of the work, the researcher organized two corpora, both containing Humanities texts (sociology, politics, anthropology, philosophy, psychology and history), totalling 6400 lexical items, selected at random. One corpus contains source texts in British and American English translated into Brazilian Portuguese, while the other holds Brazilian Portuguese texts translated into English. The model suggested by Vinay & Darbelnet (1958, 1977) and its reformulated version by Aubert (1984, 1997) was chosen as the methodology matrix for this study. Data obtained in the corpora analysis allowed the confirmation of the relevance of the direction of the translational act as a conditioning factor in the distribution of the translation modalities and, by extension, the non-viability of retroversion.
