This article develops a comparative analysis of three novels published between the 1920s and 1930s: Point Counter Point ([1928] 2014) by Aldous Huxley, Berlin Alexanderplatz ([1929] 2019a) by Alfred Döblin, and Vile Bodies ([1930] 2012) by Evelyn Waugh. Drawing on the concept of the crisis of the novel, the analysis aims to investigate how these writers responded to the aesthetic, political, and social crises of the first half of the twentieth century, tracing new directions for the novelistic genre through procedures of containment and dispersion, variation of point of view, polyphony, and formal self-reflexivity. The comparative approach focusing on authors of different nationalities (two English and one German) allows for a more comprehensive understanding of this moment that is crucial to the history of the world, as it is represented in fiction. To this end, it is also necessary to take into account the relationship between literature and other arts: classical music, in Huxley, and cinema, in Döblin and Waugh.
