Abstract

This is a contrastive study of culturally marked terms, in the Portuguese-English direction, collected in Jorge Amado´s novels – Dona Flor  e Seus Dois Maridos, Tenda dos Milagres and Tereza Batista  Home from the Wars. The main intent is to verify the degree of proximity/distance between the original and the translated text, based on the Vinay & Darbelnet (1960) model and its reformulation by Aubert (1998), in an attempt to measure the degree of translation difficulties in novels with regional accent and also to reassure the linguistic challenge caused by the impossibility of disassociation between language and culture. The several translation attempts for the same term were registered through a linear observation of some terms along the three studied novels.
