Abstract

Since 1886, when the Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson published The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, the well-known Dr Henry Jekyll, and his “worse half” Edward Hyde, have been calling the attention of thousands of readers all over the world. Early in 1887, Stevenson’s novella was performed in London theaters. In Brazil, with the peculiar title of O médico e o monstro, the text underwent many translations. Besides the translations, some authors have adapted and re-written the text, with dozens of stage and TV adaptations. Some of its gothic profile has been preserved, as well as some of its main features. The aim of the present research is to list and analyze some of the books published in Brazilian Portuguese which are considered as translations or adaptations of the original text written by Stevenson.
